IWSG: Tough Times

It's the first Wednesday of the month, and time for members of the Insecure Writer's Support Group to share their writerly insecurities with fellow members and the world. The group was started by Alex J. Cavanaugh, one of the coolest bloggers on this side of the blogosphere. For those interested in joining the group, you can visit www.insecurewriterssupportgroup.com for more information.

As much as I don't like putting up these "I haven't been writing because" posts, I'm afraid my insecurity for the new month comes down to that very fact. This past month has been one of the toughest I've faced in a long time. There is so much going on (and not going on) in my life right now that I feel I could spend an entire weeks-worth of posts just trying to explain it all.

But if I was to distill how I have been feeling into one word, it would be this one: exhausted. Things have been so hectic that the very thought of getting any significant writing done seems almost ridiculous. If ever there was a time I needed a break from all those things getting in the way, then now is the time.

  1. Michael, I hope you get your break soon!

  2. You're always free to take a break. You may find writing easier when you return to it.

    1. The break wouldn't be from writing actually, but everything else. Still, I get what you mean; a break from everything, including writing, just might lend my writing a new perspective.

  3. It's truly awesome that such a group exists! I'm now getting back into writing my second novel after a long break. The cause of that break was probably that I had a lot of insecurity about ruining all the hard work I'd done on the initial part of the story by failing to deliver on its potential in the rest. Now, the writing helps me work through that by just getting the words down to tell the story, however rough it comes out. I can play around with the words later :).

Breaks can be useful, though! Hope you get to make time for a break from the hectic pace of life--and that a summer vacation helps you return to writing and everything else refreshed!

Life really does get hectic, doesn't it? Somehow it seems more so with every passing year. It makes it so hard to balance writing with the rest of life. But, hey, we're writers. In the right time for each of us, we find a way :)

    1. Thanks, Lora. I'm glad to hear you've been busy on your second novel. Also love that you don't worry too much about your story until you get to the second draft. Wish I could adopt a similar approach to mine. :)
