B is for The Beatles
I know it is a statement you've heard a million times before, but without a doubt, The Beatles are the most influential rock band of all time. Formed in 1960, the band was made up of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They found fame and success following the 1962 release of their debut single, Love Me Do.
At the center of their success was the Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership. Together, both members would go on to pen most of their entire catalogue of songs. As a band, their career spanned an entire decade, during which they released a number of critically-acclaimed albums, as well as scoring more number one singles than any other musical act in US and UK chart history.
Choosing a favorite Beatles song is a lot like picking a favorite strand of hair on your own head; you are immediately faced with the sheer number of songs to choose from. But for me, the one Beatles song that comes to mind every time I think of the band is the timeless piano ballad, Hey Jude.
I think my favourite song is Let It Be, because that was our leaver's song at school - we had a lunchtime live music club, so when we left there was a concert, and we all sang along. I always feel a bit tearful when I hear it, though.

Let It Be would definitely make my Top 5. And your school sounds a million times more awesome than mine. The closest thing we had to an experience like that was the period after exams, just before the Christmas holidays, when the commandment would insist on them playing the Boney M. Christmas Album on the school's public address system, over and over again. :))
DeleteFavorite Beatles is indeed a tough decision. The one that gets me most is probably "Across the Universe."
ReplyDeleteI just gave the song a quick listen to juggle my memory. That's yet another solid ballad in their massive catalogue. Good one.
DeleteAgree Completely.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you do, Melanie. :D
DeleteI've always been partial to Eleanor Rigby. It's such a great song.
ReplyDeleteYeah. Love that one as well. So many great songs under their belt.
DeleteMy fave is probably still "Got to get you into my life", partially because not a lot of people know it, it's sung by Paul in his rocking voice, and it always makes me smile. A UK hit for Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, too. Sigh. Those were the days. (Er, that was another Paul song, but never recorded by him ;) )

LOL. I'm on my way home from work right now, Jemima, but I'll be sure to give that one a listen the moment I get home.
DeleteI like some Beatles songs, but I REALLY like Beatles songs covered by others, especially Come Together by Aerosmith. And solo George Harrison. And the Traveling Wilburys. Beatle-ish, right? =)

I am a fan of some of their covers too, and a fan of Aerosmith's as well. As far as their solo material goes, I've been digging one of Paul McCartney's recent singles, Queenie Eye.
DeleteTomorrow Never Knows was so out there for the time. And Helter Skelter, the first metal song. They did so many different things, it's staggering!
ReplyDeleteTruly. Helter Skelter can be considered ahead of its time in that regard.
DeleteBiggest band in the world.
ReplyDeleteI always liked I Am the Walrus.
Awesome. I must add that to my playlist for tonight as well. Few bands have come close to matching their level of fame and success. I know because I've spent some considerable time researching some of those bands for the A to Z Challenge. :)
DeleteAnother good choice of band. I can't pick a favourite either. I agree with your suggestion of Hey Jude but then I kind of agree with all the other commenters as well!
ReplyDeleteI know, right? So many great suggestions. :)
DeleteWhenever I think of the Beatles the first song that comes to mind is Yellow Submarine. =D
ReplyDeleteYet another classic worthy of consideration. Thanks, RaShelle. :)
DeleteAh yeah! These guys are my jam. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL. Glad to see that you enjoy their music too. :D
DeleteOh how young they were! They broke down some walls.
ReplyDeleteOver from the A to Z.
Nice to meet you, Susan. And quite true, the Beatles did break down walls and set a lot of trends for others to follow.
DeleteMy late brother introduced me to the Beatles. My life was never, ever the same.
ReplyDeleteIn 100 years people will still be talking about John, Paul, George and Ringo.
For me, it was my dad, who is equally late now. I still have memories of him giving side commentary whenever a Beatles documentary came on on TV.
DeleteThe Fab Four are indeed going to live on through their music.
