I know it is a statement you've heard a million times before, but without a doubt, The Beatles are the most influential rock band of all time. Formed in 1960, the band was made up of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They found fame and success following the 1962 release of their debut single, Love Me Do.
At the center of their success was the Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership. Together, both members would go on to pen most of their entire catalogue of songs. As a band, their career spanned an entire decade, during which they released a number of critically-acclaimed albums, as well as scoring more number one singles than any other musical act in US and UK chart history.
Choosing a favorite Beatles song is a lot like picking a favorite strand of hair on your own head; you are immediately faced with the sheer number of songs to choose from. But for me, the one Beatles song that comes to mind every time I think of the band is the timeless piano ballad, Hey Jude.
I think my favourite song is Let It Be, because that was our leaver's song at school - we had a lunchtime live music club, so when we left there was a concert, and we all sang along. I always feel a bit tearful when I hear it, though.

Let It Be would definitely make my Top 5. And your school sounds a million times more awesome than mine. The closest thing we had to an experience like that was the period after exams, just before the Christmas holidays, when the commandment would insist on them playing the Boney M. Christmas Album on the school's public address system, over and over again. :))
DeleteFavorite Beatles is indeed a tough decision. The one that gets me most is probably "Across the Universe."

DeleteMy fave is probably still "Got to get you into my life", partially because not a lot of people know it, it's sung by Paul in his rocking voice, and it always makes me smile. A UK hit for Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, too. Sigh. Those were the days. (Er, that was another Paul song, but never recorded by him ;) )

I am a fan of some of their covers too, and a fan of Aerosmith's as well. As far as their solo material goes, I've been digging one of Paul McCartney's recent singles, Queenie Eye.

For me, it was my dad, who is equally late now. I still have memories of him giving side commentary whenever a Beatles documentary came on on TV.
